Color-coated steel sheet, also known as pre-coated steel plate, is a colored metal sheet made from hot-dip galvanized or aluminized zinc-coated steel sheets as the base material. After degreasing and phosphating pretreatment, a high-performance organic coating is applied to the surface, followed by high-temperature baking and curing. Color-coated steel sheet combines the structural strength of steel, the rust-proof performance of the galvanized layer, and the weather-resistant and decorative properties of the organic coating. It boasts advantages such as inherent color, no need for painting, weather resistance and corrosion resistance, high aesthetic appeal, fast construction, and long service life. It is a core material for modern steel structure factories, prefabricated buildings, municipal fencing, and insulated roofing systems, and a mainstream material for lightweight, aesthetically pleasing, and durable industrial buildings.
I. Mainstream Classification of Color-Coated Steel Sheets The color-coated steel sheet industry mainly classifies them according to the base material type, coating system, and coating structure. Different categories vary greatly in weather resistance, corrosion resistance, and applicable scenarios, making this a core basis for project material selection.
1. Classification by Substrate Type
(1) Hot-dip galvanized color-coated steel sheet: Uses hot-dip galvanized steel sheet as the substrate. The zinc layer has strong adhesion and good rust prevention. The coating and zinc layer are stably bonded, resulting in excellent cost-effectiveness. It has excellent resistance to ordinary atmospheric corrosion and oxidation resistance, making it suitable for inland factories, warehouses, ordinary steel structure buildings, and fencing projects. It is the most widely used and versatile conventional color-coated steel sheet in the market.
(2) Aluminized zinc color-coated steel sheet: Uses an aluminized zinc substrate. The aluminum-zinc alloy coating is dense, and its high temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, and acid and alkali resistance far exceed those of ordinary galvanized substrates. It also has stronger salt spray resistance and aging resistance. Suitable for high-temperature workshops, humid environments, coastal areas, and moderately corrosive conditions. Its service life is significantly longer than that of galvanized color-coated steel sheet, making it a highly weather-resistant and economical steel sheet.
2. Classification by Surface Coating Material
(1) PE polyester color-coated steel sheet: PE polyester coating has good flexibility, strong adhesion, rich colors, and high cost-effectiveness. Its color retention and weather resistance meet the needs of conventional civil and industrial buildings. The disadvantages are that its resistance to ultraviolet rays and chalking is average, making it suitable for ordinary inland working conditions and conventional indoor and outdoor buildings. It is a general-purpose mainstream color-coated sheet material.
(2) SMP Silicon-Modified Polyester Color Coating: Silicon-modified components are added to polyester, significantly improving its resistance to ultraviolet rays, chalking, and color retention. The paint film has higher hardness and stronger aging resistance, and is less prone to fading and peeling. It is suitable for outdoor applications such as factory roofs, exterior walls, and municipal engineering projects exposed to sunlight for extended periods, with a longer service life.
(3) HDP High Weather Resistance Color Coating: A high weather resistance special coating, its resistance to ultraviolet rays and weather resistance far exceed that of ordinary polyester. It has excellent resistance to fading, aging, and rain, making it suitable for outdoor projects in high-altitude, sun-exposed, and rainy/humid areas, maintaining a uniform and stable color over a long period. (4) PVDF Fluorocarbon Coating
Fluorocarbon coatings are high-end coatings with stable molecular structure, strong weather resistance, corrosion resistance, UV resistance, and good self-cleaning properties. They can withstand harsh conditions such as coastal salt spray, industrial acids and alkalis, and strong sunlight, and do not fade, chalk, or peel over a long period of time. They belong to high-end, long-lasting anti-corrosion decorative panels. They are widely used in high-end venues, curtain wall projects, coastal landmark buildings, and key long-term projects.
3. Classification by Coating Structure
(1) Two-coat, one-bake: Primer + topcoat baked in one step, with moderate coating thickness and high cost-effectiveness, meeting the standards for ordinary industrial buildings and suitable for conventional roofing and wall projects.
(2) Two-coat, two-bake: Double-layer coating and two-stage curing, resulting in a thicker, more uniform, and denser paint film with better adhesion, weather resistance, and wear resistance, and stronger paint surface stability. Suitable for high-quality, long-life outdoor projects. II. Core Performance Advantages of Color-Coated Steel Sheets
1. Corrosion and Weather Resistance, Long Lifespan with Dual Protection: The bottom layer of color-coated steel sheets relies on a galvanized/aluminized zinc plating for rust prevention, while the surface layer uses an organic coating to isolate air, rainwater, and ultraviolet rays, forming a dual protection system of "metal rust prevention + paint weather resistance." This effectively prevents rusting, fading, chalking, and paint peeling, significantly reducing later maintenance and renovation costs, and extending the service life far beyond ordinary galvanized steel sheets.
2. Pre-coated Color Finish, Extremely High Construction Efficiency: Color-coated steel sheets are pre-coated at the factory, with uniform color and a well-formed paint finish. No secondary painting or coating is required on-site; direct cutting, pressing, and installation are sufficient. This greatly shortens the construction cycle, reduces on-site procedures, and avoids problems such as outdoor painting pollution, color differences, and uneven paint finishes. 3. Lightweight Material, Low Structural Load: Color-coated steel sheets are lightweight, high-strength, and have good toughness. Compared to concrete and brick exterior walls, they significantly reduce the overall building load, making them suitable for large-span steel structure factories and prefabricated building roofs and walls. They offer good seismic performance and high structural safety.
4. Rich Colors, Strong Decorative Properties: A variety of colors, including blue, gray, white, red, and antique styles, are available, along with matte, high-gloss, and frosted textures. The uniform, clean, and aesthetically pleasing colors meet the aesthetic needs of various architectural styles, from industrial minimalism to urban planning and high-end luxury. It is a mainstream decorative material for modern prefabricated buildings.
5. High Plasticity, Wide Processing Adaptability: The paint film on the sheets has excellent flexibility, allowing for easy bending, forming, punching, cutting, and seaming. The paint surface is not prone to cracking, peeling, or flaking, making it suitable for processing various finished products such as color steel tiles, wall panels, insulated sandwich panels, and irregularly shaped pressed parts. 6. Excellent cost-performance ratio and low overall cost. No painting is required upfront, and frequent maintenance is unnecessary afterward. It combines structural, corrosion-resistant, and decorative functions, offering lower costs, faster construction, and higher overall economic benefits compared to aluminum panels, stainless steel, and curtain wall panels.
III. Main Application Areas of Color-Coated Steel Sheets
1. Steel Structure Industrial Plants
This is the largest application scenario for color-coated steel sheets. They are widely used in steel structure factory roofing tiles, wall cladding panels, awnings, eaves, and edge banding. They are corrosion-resistant, durable, neat, and aesthetically pleasing, suitable for large-span industrial buildings.
2. Prefabricated Buildings and Insulation Projects
As the top and bottom layers of rock wool sandwich panels, foam sandwich panels, and polyurethane insulation panels, they are used in factories, warehouses, temporary housing, clean rooms, and insulated storage rooms, providing multiple functions including insulation, fireproofing, enclosure, and decoration.
3. Municipal Engineering and Temporary Facilities: Construction site fencing, road barriers, temporary construction buildings, prefabricated houses, and guard booth exterior wall panels. Quick installation, neat and uniform appearance, reusable, and suitable for standardized municipal construction requirements.
4. Logistics Warehousing and Cold Storage Buildings: Warehouse roofs and walls, cold storage insulated exterior walls, and enclosed factory building enclosures. Smooth surface, dust-resistant, moisture-proof, and corrosion-resistant, suitable for clean, dry, and enclosed storage conditions.
